You may not want to hear it, but summer is unfortunately coming to a close. As summer winds down, temperatures cool, and pool parties become less frequent – here’s what you need to do to prepare your pool for Autumn:
1. Start cleaning and storing accessories
Pool toys, floating devices and any other accessories that have been sitting outside basking in the sun all summer need to be cleaned and stored away.
2. Skim the pool
You’ve probably been doing this all summer, but now the leaves are falling and blowing around your backyard. Stay vigilant in keeping leaves and debris out of your pool.
3. Lower the water level/balance chemicals
About one week before you close your pool for the winter, clean debris out and test the pH, alkalinity and calcium hardness. Maintaining the proper water chemistry will help the pool last through the winter and be ready for next spring.
4. Cover the pool
When you’re ready to close down the pool completely for the season, clean it one last time, pull out ladders from the water, drain water from the pump, and make sure it’s covered completely to protect from the upcoming cruel weather.
It may be warm enough to still use your pool in September. If you’re not ready to close it down yet, that’s okay. These are the basic things you should prepare for once it’s time. Need more details?
